Counselling and Psychotherapy in Leeds City Centre

Counsellor Leeds

Hi there and thank you for visiting TherapyUK Counselling & Psychotherapy.

You have most likely arrived at this website because you or someone you know is thinking about counselling and psychotherapy.  This can be a worrying and confusing time and at this stage you probably just need information about what counselling is and how you can make use of it.

My name is Tim Arnott.  I am a fully qualified (Masters level) BACP Registered and BACP Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist.  I provide counselling in Leeds city centre (LS1), York (YO41) and online.

At TherapyUK I provide high quality professional counselling and psychotherapy.  Whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, bereavement or simply feel that something is not right, talking to an experienced counsellor is an extremely proactive first step.

As a therapist I help individuals talk about their feelings, think about their choices and help them to achieve positive change in their lives through the counselling process.

What is counselling/psychotherapy and how can it help you?

The words ‘counselling’ and ‘psychotherapy’ are often referred to as a ‘talking therapy’.  It is not about me telling you what to do – rather I will encourage you to talk about what is concerning you. I will listen with empathy and help you explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment in a safe, confidential and secure therapeutic space.

Counselling gives you a confidential, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with a trained professional.  It is about being truly listened to, helped to understand yourself better, and supported to find your own way forward.

Many people who come for counselling have never spoken to a therapist before.  They often describe feeling relieved after their first session — not because all their problems are solved, but because they finally feel understood. Counselling helps you:

  • Make sense of difficult emotions or confusing thoughts
  • Understand patterns in your behaviour or relationships
  • Develop healthier coping strategies
  • Work through past experiences that are still affecting you today
  • Build confidence, resilience, and self-awareness
  • Find practical ways forward when you feel stuck

You do not need to be in crisis to seek counselling. Many people use therapy as a space for personal growth — to better understand themselves and live more fulfilling lives.

So what actually happens in therapy?

The process of exploration which we will undertake together will help you achieve greater insight and understanding of your problems. It will help you understand yourself better and help you find solutions to resolve or cope with your situation.

During the therapy session I will encourage you to talk about your life, events, emotions, feelings, ways of thinking and patterns of behaviour.  Whilst listening carefully I will encourage your thinking to help you to see things more clearly and sometimes I will challenge you to see things in a different way.

My comfortable and relaxing therapy room is conveniently located in Leeds city centre with scenic views over the Leeds Liverpool canal and River Aire.

What to expect from counselling at TherapyUK

Starting counselling for the first time can feel daunting. Here is what the process looks like at TherapyUK:

Your first contact

You can call or text me directly on 07921101505 or send and email to tim@therapyuk.co.uk or complete the enquiry form.  I will have a brief, informal conversation with you to understand what you are looking for and answer any questions you have. This is completely free and there is no commitment.

Your first session

Your first counselling session will last for one hour.  This is a full counselling session — any administrative details are taken before it starts, so none of your hour is lost.  You will not be pushed to talk about anything you are not ready for.

Ongoing sessions

All sessions are one hour long. Most clients attend weekly, though the frequency can be adjusted to suit your needs and schedule. There is no fixed number of sessions — some people benefit from a short course of sessions; others prefer longer-term support. You are always in control.

Appointments

TherapyUK offers flexible appointment times in Leeds, York or online to fit around your schedule.  Same-week appointments are often available.

Frequently asked questions

How much does counselling cost at TherapyUK?

I charge £75 per session and each session lasts for a full hour. Many other therapists only offer 50-minute sessions.  I find clients really benefit from the extra ten minutes.  Most clients find around 12 sessions make a real difference — though there’s no minimum and no tie-in.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

TherapyUK aims to offer all appointments within one week.  Call, text 07921101505 or complete the form below to check current availability.

Do I need a GP referral for counselling in Leeds?

No. You can self-refer directly to TherapyUK without seeing your GP first. Simply call, text, email or complete the form to arrange an appointment.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed in your counselling sessions is completely confidential.  I follow the BACP’s strict ethical framework, which places client confidentiality at its heart.

What is the difference between a counsellor and a psychotherapist?

The terms are often used interchangeably. Generally, counselling tends to focus on specific issues or shorter-term support, while psychotherapy may involve deeper, longer-term exploration of underlying patterns and past experiences. I am qualified and experienced in both and will tailor my approach to what works best for you.

Do you offer online counselling?

Yes. I offer online counselling via video call, in addition to in-person sessions.  Online sessions are equally effective and offer greater flexibility for many clients.

Are you registered with BACP?

Yes. I am a Registered and Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). You can verify this registration on the BACP website.  My BACP registered number is 353900.  BACP Accreditation is a higher individual membership grade and confirms I meet rigorous standards of training, practice, and ethics.
